Real World Giving

Roset, Matthew, and Chrispus are bright young high school graduates in Kasese. Now in their senior year, their eyes were set on a hopeful future until one final obstacle stood in their way.

When Pastor Swizin called and followed up with messages, my heart sank. My wife and I were deeply troubled. *How could this be? The truth was painful: unless these promising students could raise just $60 USD to pay for their final exam, they would be forced to repeat the entire school year, not for lack of ability, but for lack of funds. Without passing this exam, they may never graduate. Their dreams of higher education would fade, and they’d be left to settle for low-paying jobs for the rest of their lives. They could become trapped by circumstances beyond their control.

I thought about my own children and how devastating that would be. These young people have already faced tremendous hardship. Many are coming from broken homes, finding refuge in the orphanage only to be denied a future simply because of an unpaid fee would have been heartbreaking.

With a little help and sacrifice through our charity, that blow of defeat didn’t have to come. Was it a sacrifice? Absolutely. But the Cross of Jesus Christ teaches us that true love always costs something. The sacrifice is great, but the worth of a single soul, the potential of a young life, is far greater.

These are the kinds of moments that define what we do.
